SURGICAL DISEASES OF THE THYROID GLAND

Abstract
The surgery of thyroid gland has been an integral part of the development of endocrine organ surgery. Marine and Kimball established that lack of iodine was the cause of endemic goiter and the use of iodine has been greatly helpful in preventing endemic goiter. The introduction of iodized salt has steadily reduced the incidence of endemic goiter throughout the world.
The earlier use of external irradiation and iodine had been only sporadically or incompletely effective. Radioactive iodine was the first adequate medical therapy, its use being started in 1941. Antithyroid drugs were initiated by Astwood in 1943. However, surgery is still advisable in younger patients and in those whose goiter is suspected of containing a tumor.
Incidence of thyroid tumor is becoming higher recently which may be attributed to the increased understanding of the general population regarding this disease rather than to the advance of the diagnostic method.
